These professionals may include, but are not limited to, those employed in the following fields: home care, hospice, community based services for the elderly, rehabilitation, diabetes education, tribal health, parish health, corrections, long term care, nurse entrepreneurs interested in establishing an independent practice, and any other health care professionals who are interested in foot care, especially as related to preventive foot care for those with diabetes.


The course provides break out sessions with demonstrations of a comprehensive foot assessment and nail debridement utilizing a podiatry drill. Participants will also learn how to perform a monofilament test, use a tuning fork, use a Doppler, and how to make basic off-loading devices and pads. Equipment will be on display, including supplies used in foot care, foot wear examples and over the counter products you might encounter. Participants will perform nail trimming on each other, so let your nails grow and wear comfortable loose clothing or scrubs.

 

Foundations of Foot Care for Health Professionals

  3. -Discuss two sensory testing methods and their significance

  4. -Name four risk factors for amputation

  5. -Discuss components of skin care

  6. -Assess footwear and give recommendations to off load two structural deformities

  7. -Identify four skin conditions and make recommendations for their management

  8. -Describe the components of nail care assessment, intervention and infection control

  9. -Name four professions involved in the foot care team that you may need to refer a patient to and how they would further help the patient

  10. -Discuss three aspects of patient education

LAURA ANNE ROEHRICK, RN, CFCN started her practice, The Foot Care Nurse, located in Northern California, in 1996. She has provided nursing foot care services in both office and outpatient settings including residential care homes, long term care facilities, private homes, senior centers, and homeless shelters. She is a renowned national speaker on the role of the registered nurse in foot and nail care.


Her particular areas of expertise are the use of the high-speed podiatry drill, instruments and supplies, infection control, natural foot care, global issues in amputation prevention and foot care nursing as a business. She was a member of the foot care nursing exam committee that established the first
